Why Was Yam Power Created?
I am a fat burning expert. Burning fat can easily be
accomplished using my Fat Burning Diet principles,
which keep my bodyfat levels below 8% most of the
time. It is a myth that a person should be burning fat
during their exercise sessions. Years ago, I thought
fat was the ideal source of fuel for exercise, but the
truth is, carbohydrates are best for high-energy
workouts. Fat is the best for long sustained exercise
and general activities during the day. Fat cannot be
converted to energy fast enough for quick movements
such as weight lifting, surfing, sprinting, swimming
and any movement which requires speed. If you try to
burn fat when making quick movements, your performance
drops. Hence, use high quality carbs for your workouts
and burn fat by carb restriction the rest of the day!
I’ve preached this for years.
Surf-City Here We Come…
I live in the San Diego area and love to surf. I often
paddle out for sessions of two hours or more every day
or every other day. When the waves get big, I get a
“bigger” workout. Several years ago I began
experimenting with foods that would sustain my energy
levels during my two-hour sessions in the water. I
tried basic foods such as bananas, and they worked
okay but weren’t perfect and could let me down before
my two-hour session was over. Then I tried all those
cheap carb powders on the market, you know, the ones
made with cornstarch (malto-dextrin and glucose
polymers), but they never felt good in my system
because they are very refined and can be allergenic.
Then I tried the typical energy bars, but they were
usually made with loads of cornstarch, along with
sugar, fructose and other refined sweeteners and
carbohydrates I would not want in my precious body.
Sweet Potatoes Were a Winner…
During my testing period, I tried using our whey and
egg protein powders to sustain energy and I would mix
it with flax seed oil and fresh fruit. I would consume
one of these drinks about 30 minutes before I paddled
out and that seemed to sustain me better than fresh
fruit, but still lacked the power I was looking for.
Then one day I ate a large yam, (actually called a
sweet potato), about 20 minutes before I went in the
water. BINGO! I was an animal on the waves that day
and never ran out of energy. I was amazed. The perfect
carbohydrate was discovered! But there was a drawback.
I didn’t feel like baking yams everyday. So I decided
to work on a sweet potato powder that I could use as
easily as our Whey Protein and Egg White Protein.
YAM Power Was Born…
It took some time but a process was developed that
would mill sweet potatoes into a dried powder that
could be used just like a protein powder. In fact, our
Yam Power can be used along WITH our protein powders
and the taste is out of this world!
YAMS Are Sweet But Safe…
Sweet Potatoes and Yams are rated about 51 on the
glycemic index, meaning they enter your bloodstream
slowly for long sustained energy. Contrast this with
honey, rice, bananas, regular potatoes, wheat, pasta
and other complex carbohydrates that have glycemic
indexes as high as 90! Sweet potatoes taste sweet, but
deliver that natural sugar slowly into your
bloodstream so you get long sustained energy. And that
is just what you want!
Bodybuilding Secrets…
Bodybuilders and endurance athletes have long used
yams and sweet potatoes. Why? Sweet potatoes and yams
are the ideal carb source, providing sustained energy,
yet won't spike your blood sugar levels, which can
lead to fatigue and fat storage.
The Secret to 5% Bodyfat…
Competitive bodybuilders especially know the power of
using YAMS and sweet potatoes in their pre-contest
dieting...to help drive their bodyfat down to 5% or
less! And with a glycemic index of 51, yams and sweet
potatoes are slow-releasing into the bloodstream,
requiring less of an insulin surge (meaning more
energy and less fat storing potential) than simple
sugars, fruit juice, most grains, oatmeal, cereals,
pasta, potatoes, bread, carrots, carrot juice, and
other concentrated carbohydrates.
Long Sustained Energy...
We know yams are the "king-of-carbs" for athletic
performance and for anyone wanting long sustaining
energy. But who wants to carry around baked yams and
sweet potatoes to munch on all day? I sure don’t! So
to supply your body with the power of yams we have
created YAM power...the world's first powdered sweet
potato that you can add to a protein drink, or a meal,
to instantly give your body the "slow releasing carbs
you need. Perfect for endurance athletes,
tri-athletes, and runners.
YAM "Ice Cream”, the Ultimate Low Glycemic Treat!
YAM Power is the world's first, "whole food" complex

with fiber, and mixes easily in your favorite
beverage. And you can bake low glycemic "Pumpkin-like
Pies", and make an outrageously delicious "YAM Ice
Cream" (See Recipes Below)
Ingredients: Sweet Potato Powder (Yams), Sodium
Acid Pyrophosphate (derived from natural sources), and
Tetra Sodium Pyrophosphate (derived from natural
sources) Comes in 24 oz. containers. One scoop equals
35 grams of slow-releasing carbohydrate.
Suggested Use
20-30 minutes before a workout or training session,
mix 2 scoops Yam Power in water and blend or stir
until well dissolved, then drink. Two scoops of Yam
power will sustain a medium sized athlete for
approximately a 1 to 2 hour workout. For longer events
or training time, simply drink 1-2 more scoops of Yam
Power and GO! Below are simple suggestions on Yam
Power’s use:
Pre-Workout Drink
(Mix in a blender)
1 – scoop………… ½ to 1-hour workout (mix with 6 oz. pure
water)
2 – scoops……….. 1-2 hour workout (mix with 12 oz. pure
water)
(You may also include ½ scoop of Jay Robb’s Whey or
Egg White protein with this drink if you wish.)
Post-Workout Recovery Drink
In a blender place 12 ounces of water, 1 scoop of Yam
Power and 1 scoop of Jay Robb’s Whey Protein or Egg
White Protein. Blend and drink within 30-minutes after
a hard workout or training session.
YAM Ice Cream
In a blender place:
8 oz. water
2 scoops Yam Power
1 cup of crushed ice
Blend for 1 minute until thick like a milk shake. My
family and I love Yam Ice Cream and enjoy this low
glycemic treat often as an alternative to high sugar
ice cream. Yam Ice Cream is dairy free, lactose free,
casein free, sugar free, non-fat and delicious!
For a special Yam Ice Cream treat, try adding a scoop
of Jay Robb’s Whey Protein into the blender and/or a
tablespoon of raw almond butter.
PUMPKIN-LIKE PIE (recipe)
Fat Burning Power Rating “7” (10 is best)
Per Serving (serves 8)
Calories: 112
Protein: 6g
Carbohydrate: 17g
Fat: 2g
Ingredients: (Purchase at health food store)
12 oz. pure water
2 oz. (2 scoops) Jay Robb’s Egg White Protein
(vanilla) or Whey Protein
1 tbs. pure unrefined coconut butter or real butter
2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
3 oz. (3 scoops) Jay Robb’s YAM Power (sweet potato
powder)
1 oz. (1 scoop if you use Jay Robb’s protein scoop)
Arrowroot Powder
2 tbs. Jay Robb’s Agave (optional and sold on our web
site at JayRobb.com)
Topping (optional)
4 oz. low fat sour cream mixed with 1 tbs. Agave
Place the water in a blender and begin adding each
ingredient, one-by-one, buzzing for a few seconds
after each ingredient is added. Once all ingredients
are added, blend until creamy smooth
Coat a 9-inch pie pan with unrefined coconut butter,
then pour the mixture from your blender into the pie
pan. If needed, tap the pan on a counter top until the
mixture is evenly spread across the pan. Bake in a
425-degree oven for 15-20 minutes until the outside is
golden brown and the inside is cooked so that when you
slip a toothpick into the middle it pulls out clean.
Remove from the oven and let cool for about 30-60
minutes. The pie will be puffy when you first remove
it from the oven, then it will slowly fatten out,
which is what you want it to do before cutting. Cut
into six pieces and top each slice with a dollop of
the sour cream/Agave topping if desired. Go
ahead…indulge and enjoy this special “guilt-free”
holiday delight! A taste treat without the sugar
“rush”!
TAKE THE YAM POWER CHALLENGE!
Workout as you normally would and note your energy
levels. Then, 20-30 minutes before your next workout,
drink 1-2 scoops of Yam Power mixed in water and note
the energy you have during that workout. I think you
will be amazed!
