Lysine is one of the nine essential amino acids, meaning it cannot be manufactured in the body from other amino acids and must be consumed exogenously from the food we consume. Lysine is the limiting amino acid (the amino acid found in the smallest quantity in a food which lowers the rest of the amino acids to that same low level) in most grains but is usually in abundance in most beans/legumes.
Lysine competes with the antagonist amino acid arginine. If a diet is too rich in arginine and too low in lysine it can make a person more vulnerable to viral infections and disease because lysine is necessary for building the immune system.
Lysine plays a major role in calcium absorption, muscle building, recovery from injures (and surgery), and the production of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.
Some clinical research indicates that lysine may be beneficial for those with herpes simplex, but more research is needed to substantiate this claim.
