My Secret to Success

During interviews and in my personal life, I am often asked, "Jay, what is your secret to success?" To this I reply, "Faith." I know and fully trust that God has a clear path for me to follow. All I need to do is have faith by following that path without question.

A reporter once asked famous film director Steven Spielberg, "What is your secret to success?" Steven replied (and I will paraphrase), "I'm a good listener. I try to always listen to that tiny voice inside that directs me through life." Steven is a wise man and it has paid off: he is the most famous and successful movie director of all time. His movies have grossed over $8 billion worldwide and his net worth is around $3 billion. Steven's secret is also my secret, and I believe it can be everyone's secret. "Walk in faith by listening to the small voice inside of you. It is God speaking to you."

But there is one other facet to this faith walk. Wherever I am directed, I must always (and I mean ALWAYS) do my BEST. This has been my personal key to success. You must do your best in every situation, and this is the theme of one of my latest books, High on Life: Realize Success by Doing Your Best. In fact, this is my second favorite book of all time, (my favorite book to date is, Be Still). I have deviated slightly from my nutritionist platform to share a few gems of wisdom about life that can truly help you be the best you can be. If you want to know my secrets to success, I suggest you get a copy of both books; I truly feel they can change your life like no other books you have ever read. Both are available as eBooks in the book section of our website. High on Life will also be in print by mid-August 2008.

My new book, The Fat Burning Diet Made Easy, is also available as an eBook and I strongly encourage you to get a copy ASAP! It seems that everyone who tries this new program is losing weight rapidly and truly loves how easy it is to follow. You can also look for this book in print about mid-August. In The Fat Burning Diet series, I honestly feel that this book is the BEST! And as you know, we at Jay Robb only "offer the best!"

And speaking of the best, this issue of Health-eLiving is chock-full of the most recent information that can help you get in the best shape of your life! Read on and enjoy!

God bless you!

3 JayTips To Help You
Get in the Best Shape of Your Life!

JayTip #1

Breathe Deeply

Are you stressed? Do you ever suffer from anxiety attacks? Do you just wish that you could relax? If you are not as relaxed as you would like to be, breathing deeply can help calm your mind and lessen your anxiety.

Chronic stress can cause shallow breathing that often becomes a habit, but if you focus on breathing more slowly and deliberately, making each breath longer and deeper, you can nourish every cell in your body with the additional oxygen. Breathing deeply and deliberately also encourages relaxation.

To practice deep breathing, sit up or lie down with a straight back. Breathe deeply and slowly through your nose, counting to  six as you inhale.
Make sure you are inhaling into your stomach by placing your hand above your navel and feeling it move downward and outward as you pull air into your body. Exhale through your mouth as you count slowly to eight. Concentrate on counting your breaths and feeling the oxygen as it fills your entire body. Repeat this exercise ten times, twice per day or as needed. i

If you make it a habit, regular deep breathing can:

  • Increase oxygen flow to your cells. When your cells are nourished with extra oxygen, they become more efficient, leading to an increase in your metabolic rate. Since the rate of your metabolism controls the rate at which your body is burning fat, breathing deeply can actually help you lose weight.

  • Benefit asthma sufferers. If you suffer from asthma, making it a habit to breathe air deeply into your lungs on a regular basis can reduce the shortness of breath your condition makes you experience. Yoga and Pilates both use deep breathing techniques, and some asthmatics have successfully used them to control attacks. ii

  • Release endorphins into your system. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, deep breathing exercises are important for maintaining mental health. Breathing deeply increases oxygen flow to your blood and causes your body to release endorphins (natural hormones) which promote a feeling of relaxation and leave you feeling relaxed. iii

  • Help lower your blood pressure. Studies show that high blood pressure is associated with a fast rate of breathing. When you practice slowing your breathing rate, you can slow your heart rate and you can lower high blood pressure. iv

  • Reduce stress and anxiety. If you struggle with anxiety, you may have a tendency to take shallow breaths from your chest, which can lead to hyperventilation. If your chest and/or shoulders move when you breathe, you are breathing from your chest. Deep breathing means learning to pull air deep into your stomach, not your chest. When practiced regularly, breathing deeply can prevent anxiety and anxiety attacks by clearing your mind and body of extra stress. v

YOU CAN HAVE AMAZING ABS!

Do you wish you had the lean, toned abs you see on fitness magazine models? Do you do crunches religiously, but fail to see your stomach improve? You're not alone. Most Americans would like a tighter midsection, but find it difficult to figure out how to get those perfect abs. But toned abdominal muscles have a more important purpose than simply looking great.
Strong, fit abdominal muscles have many health benefits, because they are part of your core body strength. They prevent pain or injury to the back and neck, and support your body to keep it well-balanced. Your core, which includes your abs, hips, and lower back, is the root of all other movement. If your core is weak, your body is weak and liable to injury. The core stabilizes the spine, so a strong core is important for nearly all movements.

To get your abs in shape, you can:
  • Start small: Don't overwhelm yourself by making a huge change in your lifestyle all at once. Start small—try eliminating dessert, adding 10 or 20 crunches to your before-bed routine, or refraining from eating after 7 pm. The results you can see from starting small can become the motivation you need to make bigger changes, like starting a more serious diet, hiring a professional trainer, and ramping up your exercise routine.

  • Watch your diet: Whether you want visible "six-pack" abs or you just want a stronger midsection, the first thing you must do is change your diet. Diet is a key component of any shaping-up program. Many people have stomach muscles hidden beneath layers of fat or flab. Watch the inches come off your waist when you change the way you eat. To help your abs show, follow my fat burning diet principles for carb control.

  • Focus on form: Instead of doing crunches by the hundreds, focus on doing them slowly, with perfect form. Your body will get a better workout than if you had done a lot of reps without worrying about proper form. If you're not certain whether you're doing it right, ask someone else at your gym, or set up a session with a personal trainer.

  • Get professional help: You don't need to use a professional every day, but when you begin a new exercise plan, it's a good idea to start by spending an hour or two with a personal trainer. Expert advice can help you feel certain that you are getting the most benefit out of a routine and that you are using proper form. Your trainer will also be able to suggest more specific exercises that will target the areas you need to develop. For best results, meet up again after a few months so you can get a few more pointers and measure your progress!

  • Buddy up! Getting support from friends is always a motivation to stick with your diet and exercise routines, but a friend who is willing to go the distance with you? Now that's a real friend. For a little extra motivation, find someone who is willing to stick with a diet and exercise program with you. Meet up with your buddy at the gym, go for walks at lunch with a co-worker, or simply keep in touch by phone to help each other stay on track.

JayTip #3

CHOLESTEROL: THE WRONG ENEMY

If you are used to thinking of cholesterol as an enemy, lying in wait to afflict you with heart disease, you are not alone. Many Americans believe that cholesterol is the cause of arthrosclerosis and heart disease, and think that they should do all they can to lower their cholesterol levels, but this perspective is not entirely accurate. Cholesterol is actually essential! In fact, it plays a vital role in regulating your body's hormone production. Studies show that 60-70 percent of all cholesterol in your blood does not come from your diet. Instead, the liver produces it as it processes carbohydrate, which explains why a diet high in refined carbohydrate can lead to excessively high levels of cholesterol in your body.

Cholesterol itself does not cause heart disease. In the 1990s, Dr. Matthias Rath discovered the connection between vitamin C and heart disease,

finding that when cell walls are deficient in vitamin C, they tend to crack and tear. Cholesterol repairs these lesions caused by vitamin C deficiency. Thick cholesterol build-up is merely a patch covering leaky artery walls.  The real problem is vitamin C deficiency.  In reality, making sure you get plenty of vitamin C is the best way to combat heart disease. vi  To truly improve your mind, you must make a conscious effort to make healthy choices that will challenge your brain and improve your memory.

To benefit your heart and reduce your risk of heart disease:

  • Take vitamin C: A deficiency of vitamin C in your body can lead to heart disease, according to the latest research. With this understanding in mind, as a clinical nutritionist, I advocate taking 1000 mg of vitamin C taken three times daily with meals, to keep the cell walls in your body strong and lesion-free. vii

  • Take L-Lysine: Lysine is an essential amino acid that is responsible for tissue growth and strength, as well as producing enzymes and fighting viral infections. If you supplement your diet with vitamin C and lysine, you can significantly improve the health of your body's tissues and cells. As a clinical nutritionist, I recommend that you supplement with 600 mg of lysine, twice daily with meals. Add lysine to your diet and reduce your risk of heart disease and arthrosclerosis! viii

  • TIP! Visit your local health food store to find the lysine supplements you are looking for. You can also visit my website to find my Free Form L-Lysine for immune support!

  • Watch your diet: Diet is a huge part of your overall health and well-being. Even though high cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, regulating your cholesterol so that it does not reach high levels is a wise choice. To do this, try following the diet guidelines in my simple new book The Fat Burning Diet Made Easy.

  • Get more sunlight! Far from being a dangerous cause of skin cancer, moderate, regular sunbathing is good for you, and can actually reduce your cholesterol. When the sunlight strikes your skin, cholesterol is converted into beneficial vitamin D in your body. To break down cholesterol in your body, spend at least thirty to sixty minutes per day sunbathing, and watch your cholesterol levels improve dramatically! ix

Q & A

How to get in shape in only two hours a week!

Q: I can only get to the gym 2 days a week for about an hour each day. Is that enough time in the gym to get in shape?

A:  The answer to your question depends on what kind of shape you wish to achieve. In general, you can get in great shape only training two days per week if you will train hard and train properly, BUT you must combine this with a wholesome diet (such as my Fat Burning Diet Made Easy) that melts fat while feeding your muscles. I also suggest that on the two days you are in the gym you perform a full-body workout along with at least 15 minutes of cardiovascular training. Two days per week is not enough to radically boost your aerobic capacity, but it is enough to get you moderately fit and firm if you are a woman, and fit, strong, and muscular if you are a man. Keep in mind your DIET is what keeps your body fat levels low, not your exercise program. The purpose of training in the gym is to get fit. The purpose of eating properly is to get lean. Do not confuse the two.
