GOT FISH? FISH OIL CAN KEEP YOU YOUNG, PAIN-FREE, AND
MENTALLY POWERFUL

When you think of fish oil, what comes to mind? If all you can imagine is the disgusting cod liver oil your mother used to make you take, think again. Fish oil doesn't have to taste awful! Instead of buying cod liver oil, spend a little more for the natural, stable fish oil that is odorless and come in capsule form. Stable fish oil also has more significant health benefits. i

Omega-6 fatty acids (the "bad" fats contained in vegetable and saturated oils) really aren't bad at all; however, they must be balanced with omega-3 fatty acids or your body becomes more prone to infection of all kinds. Most Americans eat far too much omega-6 fatty acids and are deficient in omega-3s.ii High levels of omega-6 paired with low levels of omega-3s can be associated with greater depressive symptoms and neuroticism, so it's

vital that you get enough omega-3 to balance the omega-6 in your diet. iii The American Heart Association touts the benefits of omega-3, recommending multiple servings of fish every week, but an easier way to make sure you get enough omega-3 fats is to simply take a fish oil supplement once a day. iv If you opt to eat fish more frequently, watch the amount of mercury you're eating by checking the FDA's table of mercury in fish here.

Taking a fish oil supplement regularly can:

Lessen pain and inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids have a significant positive effect on your body's inflammatory response and help prevent and relieve painful conditions such as arthritis.

Protect against stroke and improve cardiovascular health. Studies highlighted by the American Heart Association clearly show that those with higher levels of omega-3s in their diets have far lower rates of coronary heart disease than those who (like most people) have omega-6 heavy diets. A far lower incidence of stroke has also been observed in those with omega-3 rich diets. v

Improve brain function and increase mental capacity. Children with low levels of omega-3 have a lower mental capacity overall, especially in solving mathematical problems. Studies have shown that increasing omega-3 intake increases intellectual capacity as early as two hours after intake. vi

Lessen depression and/or psychosis. According to many studies, including one conducted by researchers at the United Kingdom's University of Sheffield, omega-3 fish oil supplements can alleviate symptoms of bipolar disorder, depression, and psychosis. vii

Reduce symptoms of hyperactivity disorders such as ADD and ADHD. A study by the UK's Durham Education Authority showed omega-3 can improve the brain power and concentration of hyperactive children. Information from the University of Adelaide suggests that omega-3 fish oil may have a more significant long-term effect on ADD than medication. viii

Lower rates of heart, joint, and skin problems. Older Eskimos have an extremely low rate of heart disease and joint and skin afflictions. Studies show that this is almost certainly due to the significant amount of fish they consume, as omega-3-rich fish can prevent cardiac arrhythmias and build-up in the arteries. ix Receive the same heart-healthy benefits by adding fish oil supplements to your diet!

THE WONDERS OF VITAMIN C

Back in the days of pirates and seafaring explorers, sailors on long journeys were often afflicted with a disease called scurvy, which resulted in spongy, bleeding gums, tooth loss, and purple spots on the body. If it was left untreated, it could be fatal. Thousands of sailors died from this disease, which was caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. Introducing limes into the diets of English sailors on long voyages gave them the nickname "limeys," but it made the disease nearly disappear. Vitamin C deficiencies can range from severe (fatal) to nearly unnoticeable.
Today, nearly everyone gets some vitamin C in their diets. You may not be in danger of scurvy, but adding more vitamin C to your diet can:

  • Prevent cardiovascular disease. In a recent study, researchers found that vitamins C and E can help prevent heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases by regulating the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. These vitamins can also reduce the free radicals that form inside the heart and mitigate blood clots so your heart functions normally. x

  • Reduce likelihood of stroke. The level of vitamin C in your body may reduce your risk for stroke, according to a long-term study of over 20,000 UK residents. Researchers found that over ten years, those with the highest concentration of Vitamin C at the beginning of the study ended up with a 42 percent lower risk of stroke, even after adjusting for variable factors. xi

  • Slow skin wrinkling. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition what you eat affects how quickly your skin ages. In recent studies on skin aging, researchers reported fewer wrinkles in people whose diets had plenty of vitamin C-rich foods. A vitamin C-deficient diet seems to be a risk factor for wrinkles and age-related skin dryness. Researchers say this makes sense: vitamin C is an antioxidant that synthesizes collagen, a protein that can help keep your skin elastic. xii

  • Strengthen your immune system. Noble Prize-winning scientist Linus Pauling was the first to give vitamin C exposure as a wonderful way to strengthen your immune system. Vitamin C does this by neutralizing the free radicals that cause many illnesses and has consistently been used as an anti-inflammatory agent and immunity builder.

  • To get more vitamin C in your diet, eat more high-citrus fruits and vegetables, and take a vitamin C supplement. You are probably familiar with the sweet, juicy Bing Cherries you can purchase at the grocery store, but you may not know that some of the best vitamin C on earth comes from a cherry. Of all the fruits and vegetables, Acerola Cherries contain one of the highest concentrations of naturally occurring vitamin C on earth (not the synthetic ascorbic acid that is often marketed as a cheap form of vitamin C).

  • TIP! Make the benefits of vitamin C part of your life today by supplementing your diet with Jay Robb's Acerola C Cherry Vitamin C Extract! or try Jay Robb's Vitamin C Bioflavanoid Complex!

KICK THE CAFFEINE HABIT!

Does your morning routine include a pit stop at your local coffee shop or café? Are you addicted to soda pop, coffee, or tea? Over 85 percent of Americans consume caffeine regularly. Each coffee drinker has an average of 3.3 cups per day, and 65 percent of all coffee is consumed at breakfast. xiii If you are among the addicted, you are putting your mental and physical health in danger and hurting your ability to realize peace.

Let's be honest: caffeine is just a legal drug that produces an altered mental and physical state. If you're like many Americans, you are running on a caffeine-induced high, and if you must rely on caffeine to get you through your day, you're really an addict. The Starbucks phenomenon is part of a recent upswing in coffee and soft drink consumption, but beware of the effects of caffeine.

Regular caffeine intake/caffeine addiction can:

Erode your health. A popular science experiment involving a glass of coke and an uncoated iron nail proves that Coca-Cola can dissolve iron in less than five days. Soft drinks are one way you might choose to consume caffeine, but if they can melt iron so quickly, imagine what they can do to your teeth and stomach!

Elevate blood pressure. In a recent study conducted at Duke University, regular coffee drinkers with type 2 diabetes ingested the caffeine equivalent of 4 cups of coffee a day (their normal intake). When they took the caffeine, their blood sugar levels rose nearly 10 percent. xiv

Elevate blood glucose levels in diabetics and exaggerate the effects of stress. The Duke University study referenced above also concluded that caffeine could make it more difficult for diabetics to control their glucose levels, even if they did not consume fully caffeinated beverages. Also, on days when the subjects took caffeine, their blood pressure was much higher. If you think caffeine is relieving your stress, think again. The same study revealed that stress hormone levels can rise an average of 32 percent in those who consume caffeine. xv

Increase risk of miscarriage. A study of over a thousand pregnant California women showed that women who regularly consumed 200 mg of caffeine a day (the equivalent of only 10 ounces of coffee) were twice as likely to miscarry. xvi

Cause you to lose touch with yourself. Caffeine is a stimulant that causes you to feel differently than you would otherwise feel. When you are exhausted, caffeine may make you feel nervous or anxious instead. When you are in an unnatural state, it is impossible to truly be at peace.

Create difficulty sleeping. According to a recent study in the Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, consuming caffeine makes your body's sleep cycles more shallow, which can reduce your body's perceived quality of rest and total time spent sleeping. xvii

Cause you to experience anxiety and depression. Caffeine alters the natural action of the adrenal glands, encouraging secretion of adrenaline, an anxiety-increasing hormone. xviii Interestingly, caffeine is often used in clinical trials to induce panic attacks in unstable patients. To give your mental health a boost, kick the caffeine habit!

TIP! To reconnect to life without a caffeine buzz, start slowly. Cut caffeine out of your diet gradually and expect some withdrawal symptoms. Happily, the symptoms should disappear within a few days, or after your system has cleansed itself. Switch to drinking pure water and herbal teas. Get more sleep to keep yourself rested and healthy. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, prayer, yoga, and meditation. For more information on how to connect to the real you, see my newly-released book, Be Still!

Q & A

Q:  I've tried to follow strict low-carb diets but I only lose weight initially, then after a few weeks I lose control, blow the diet, and gain the weight back. I need to lose 45 pounds in all. On strict low-carb dieting, it seems like all weight loss stops after my first two weeks. I know that limiting my carbohydrate intake can help me lose weight but am baffled as to why my weight loss comes to a halt after only a few weeks of dieting.

A:
Carb-controlled eating is effective for losing weight because it manages the fat-storing hormone insulin. Unfortunately, too much of a good thing can spell failure. Limiting carbohydrate intake is effective as long as you DO NOT restrict carbohydrate too severely. Your body is designed to operate by burning carbohydrate sometimes and fat at other times.

Both are ideal sources of fuel. If a person cuts carbs severely, he or she will lose weight quickly and easily, usually without any hunger. But within a matter of days glycogen levels can become depleted and trouble can soon follow.

Glycogen is carbohydrate stored in the muscles and liver. Muscle glycogen reserves are what power you while exercising and liver glycogen keep blood sugar levels stable to power your brain cells. During intense exercise, your body will burn mostly stored carbohydrate, not fat. For slow movements, such as walking, if insulin levels are in check your body will choose fat as its primary fuel choice. If muscle or liver glycogen levels become depleted, you quickly become weak and tired. You may also have poor brain function. This simply means you need to increase your carbohydrate intake. If you are not consuming enough carbohydrate your body may think it is starving and you will stop losing weight, which is why extreme low-carb dieting only works for a week or two.

My Fat Burning Diet and my all-new Fat Burning Diet Made Easy programs teach you how to eat to burn fat approximately 50% of the time and burn and store carbohydrate 50% of the time. This is achieved by consuming some low-carb meals to help you burn fat and some higher-carb meals to allow your body to reload diminishing glycogen levels. When followed correctly, you can easily reach your goal weight without fatigue and without finding yourself stuck in a weight-loss plateau. Please see our book section online for more information on The Fat Burning Diet and The Fat Burning Diet Made Easy.

Health e-Recipe:

Mighty Mango Shake

It's mango season, and I must admit mangos are my favorite fruit. In North America, mangos are in season from May through July. Most people don't know this, but an organic Haden mango can be eaten skin and all, just like an apple! Other varieties can also be eaten with the skin, but Haden mangos are the best because they have thinner skins and less stringy flesh. In fact, if you grew up on the islands, you would probably have picked mangos from the trees and eaten them right on the spot. They are delicious, juicy, and high in fiber. For use in the shake below, peel the mango and slice off the juicy, orange flesh with a sharp knife, being careful of the large, white pit in the middle.
