How To BEAT the BLOAT!
By Jay Robb
Clinical Nutritionist

What is "the bloat"?
The bloat is a term describing a distended stomach and especially a distended lower abdomen. Many individuals who experience the "bloat" may also be experiencing gas, constipation, diarrhea, colon disorders, mood swings, antisocial behavior, and overall fatigue.

What causes the bloat?
A low lactobacteria count in the colon, which can produce gas and cause food residues and fiber to build up and ferment in the colon. Lactobacteria are the friendly bacteria that reside in your colon. Their job is to assist with end result digestion and keep harmful bacteria at bay. When your friendly lactobacteria are doing their job, (a) your colon maintains an acid environment, (b) harmful bacteria are kept in check, and (c) bowel movements can become effortless and nearly odorless.

What destroys lactobacteria?
1. Antibiotics
2. Birth control pills
3. Gluten intolerance
4. Wheat allergies
5. Sweets (sugars can feed yeast and harmful bacteria in your colon)
6. Refined foods
7. A low fiber intake (rectified by simply eating a whole food diet)
8. Lack of food for the lactobacteria (they thrive on lactose!)

How to beat the bloat?
Include lactose-rich foods in your diet, including sweet dairy whey, which will directly feed lactobacteria. Also include yams, sweet potatoes, winter squash, and brown rice in your diet as secondary food (lactobacteria can also feed on dextrin, which is created when your body breaks down starches). AVOID pasta, bread, sugary cereals, and other refined grains.

What about gluten intolerance and wheat allergies?
If you suspect you are gluten intolerant, then try this simple test. Avoid ALL grains (and I mean ALL!) for four days, and then on the fifth day consume whole wheat bread or pasta twice. If you develop gas, bloating, diarrhea, or colon problems in the next 24 hours, then you can assume you are gluten intolerant and should avoid all grains except brown rice.

"Bloat-Buster Breakfast"
16 oz. nonfat plain yogurt
2 tbs. sweet dairy whey
Mix in a bowl and eat this at least three to four mornings every week along with fresh fruit or a whole grain cereal (Avoid the cereal on low-carb days.) The herb Stevia may be added to the mixture to give it a sweet taste.

NOTE: The Fat Burning Diet suggests that you eat low-carb meals and consume no starches on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It also suggests you eat high-carb meals-including starches on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Sunday you will eat low carbs for breakfast and lunch and high carbs for dinner. For more details, please refer to my book, The Fat Burning Diet.

How else can I consume sweet dairy whey?
Sweet dairy whey can also be taken in water the first thing in the morning or can be added to your favorite protein drink. Two to four tablespoons daily is usually plenty to feed the lactobacteria in your colon.

What if I am lactose intolerant?
Some health experts estimate that millions of Americans are lactose intolerant. This could partly be due to a low lactobacteria count in their colons, so the body can no longer digest lactose. The answer may not be to avoid lactose rich foods-such as milk and other dairy products-but instead to simply take a lactase enzyme to assist one's body in breaking down lactose properly so it can help feed the lactobacteria in their colon.

Where can I get sweet dairy whey?
Sweet dairy whey is available from Jay Robb Enterprises Inc. and from finer health food stores across the nation. Approximately one level scoop (a scoop is included in each container) equals two tablespoons.
